Make a lace crown with flutter trims
To make this lace crown you will need
a small length of 9mm fold over elastic
needle and thread
fabric stiffener and a container to put it in
round contain to shape your crown
towel for your mess
You can purchase a fabric stiffener from a fabric shop or you can make your own. There is not a shop close that has it so I made my own.
I made my own using cornflour and water. 1 tablespoon of cornflour and 2 tablespoons of water. I mixed the cold water with the cornflour in a saucepan and thickened it on the hot plate. This will make you a paste.
I liked this method the best it set firmer then the other options I tried.
I did try a few different methods. I used powder starch with corn flower and a small amount of PVA glue. This worked well. I didn’t thicken the mixture on the stove.
You will need something to shape your crown. I am using a 1kg milo tin wrapped in cling wrap. This is for the 26x15cm flutter trim.
Take your chosen crown. Rub it in your fabric stiffener mixture.
Using the paste I wet my flutter first with water. The paste is thicker so just rub it in the paste and then wipe it across the flutter with your fingers. You don’t want to cover it to thick. You want to wipe off the excess with your fingers so there is not any blobs in the holes.
Once you have coated your flutter trim in the mixture give it a squeeze to get out the excess liquid.
Mould your crown around the tin. Wrap it so the bottom is flat if you want a crown. The top edge will flute out.
Or if you want it more like a tiara then push it down flat.
I sat the tin in my peg basket out in the sun to dry.
Once dry I took a length of 9mm fold over elastic about 18cm long. Length will depend on who you are making the crown for. This size fits my head and my 9 year who is about the size of a 6 year old.
You can also make a lace crown using the smaller flutter trim and make a small crown that just sits on top of the headband.
Great party idea for 8 to 10 year olds. You could stiffen the crowns and attach elastic ready for the party goers to decorate with rhinestones and jewels. Then take home as party favours.
